Mayan Weavings 4/15/2014
For our Mayan Weaving project we were focusing on the types of patterns we could weave. A pattern is something repeated, whether it is stripes or colors or shapes, etc. Each student began with a simple drawing, and then received a cardboard loom to wrap their WEFT thread around. WEFT threads are the ones that are attached to the loom. When using a cardboard loom, these are most often found going vertically. WARP threads are the ones that you are weaving with, and are most often found going horizontally. The students were able to choose what colors and types of yarn they wanted to use for their weaving. Some used skinnier yarn, and others used fatter. Some of the yarn was chunky and some was smooth. The most important thing to remember when weaving is OVER, UNDER, OVER, UNDER. A weaving will look very odd if you forget this simple thing!
